Musicians and TJs

Marcelo Rojas

Marcelo Rojas, internationally known in milongas and tango festivals, is a “musicalizer” for the great tango radio station in Buenos Aires, « La 2×4 ». The station is listened to the world over. He welcomed me on a very hot porteñe afternoon in the radio’s offices. Smiling and friendly, he took the time to show me the recording studio and the huge collection of CDs, cassettes and records accumulated through the years thanks to private donations and music research. It is a real national and cultural treasure, part of the tango’s rich heritage. In addition to the research and the rehabilitation of these recordings, he works to digitalize them and to share this music through the radio waves.

With live radio as our backdrop, Marcelo spoke to me about his career, his work and his fascinating experience with the tango.

Punto y Branca

He lives in Milan and together with Felix Picherna is the most popular Argentinian musicalizador in Italy. His choices range from classical orchestras to contemporary ones, and in his evenings there is a slight touch of modern tango. Son of art (his parents were tango dancers), in Argentina he collaborated with an important comic magazine. In the early 90s he was called in Italy by Hugo Pratt to work on the Corto Maltese magazine. It is often called in milongas and festivals in Italy and abroad: Monaco, Barcelona, ‚Äč‚ÄčLondon, Granada, Madrid, Lugano. He loves his work as a musicalizador, for the exchange of energy that the dance floor can generate. Its tandas are always guided by the atmosphere of the milonga and the dancers on the track.

Walter Abrigo

Dj resident of the milonga of Artetango (Aosta) and Aires Nuevos (Turin) he lives immersed in music (his two sons are very good musicians); he discovers the tango through the music of Piazzolla and begins to study the history and traditions of tango, deepening the knowledge of orchestras, singers, styles and eras. For him, music is one and must touch "el corazon", he thinks that there is not a single "true" tango, that there is not only one path, but that there is always evolution. His musical selection is based on respect for the tango, its musicians and authors on a par with tango, even when it offers more modern music, following a methodical and unexceptionable execution technique. He has worked for several years mainly in Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta, Tuscany, but also in France and Switzerland, developing an intense and varied experience.

Alessandro Francini

Dj resident of Milonga Blu (Florence), he calls himself "Di Sarli and D'Arienzo style"; he loves all the beautiful music, that's why he likes to use the CDs, because they allow to return an enveloping sound that is faithful to the original recordings. It offers structurally classic selections without imposing sequences of songs "unobtainable", but with an ad hoc lineup on the evening. The track is his constant reference, as a good good tailor tries to sew the musical selections to the extent of the evening. The curtains that fits every tanda accompany the dancers to their place with joy, respecting a little 'all tastes. He has worked for several years mainly in Tuscany, but also in Emilia Romagna and Valle d'Aosta.
